The Zetech Sparks ignited the semi-final playoffs with a fiery 62-50 triumph over the Equity Hawks, marking a promising start in their bid for the Kenya National Basketball women’s Premier League final.
The Friday night clash at Nyayo Gymnasium, Nairobi, saw the Sparks overcome an initial setback to blaze a trail towards victory.
Despite a rocky start that saw them trailing 16-06 in the first quarter, the Sparks rallied back with a 17-14 win in the second, narrowing the halftime score to 23-30. The team’s momentum surged in the second half, securing a 5-point lead with a dominant 17-05 third quarter and sealing the deal with a 22-15 final quarter.
Madina Okot was the standout performer, dazzling with a game-high 29 points, while Christine Akinyi contributed a significant 15 points. Okot’s prowess was particularly evident as she effortlessly navigated through Equity’s defense, sinking two three-pointers in the process.
The Hawks’ efforts were led by Rachael Akinyi, Betty Kananu, and Rita Akinyi, who collectively amassed 26 points.
Zetech’s head coach, Maurice Obilo, expressed pride in his team’s resilience and strategic adjustments, which turned the game in their favor. “Our start may have been shaky, but the adjustments we made offensively allowed us to take control. We aim to continue this momentum into game two on Sunday,” stated Obilo.
Equity Hawks’ coach Benson Oluoch urged his team to intensify their efforts and correct their mistakes for the upcoming rematch. “We need to step up our game. I’m hopeful that we’ll address our shortcomings and secure a win in game two,” Oluoch remarked.
The stage is set for an intense sequel as the two teams prepare to clash once more in the second game of the semi-finals on Sunday, continuing their quest in the five-game series.
