Cabinet Secretary for Sports Kipchumba Murkomen has expressed the government’s commitment to working closely with the newly elected Football Kenya Federation (FKF) leadership to rejuvenate football in the country.
The assurance comes after Hussein Mohammed was elected as the new FKF president on Saturday, December 7, succeeding Nick Mwendwa, who had held the position since 2016. Hussein’s election marks the beginning of a four-year term, with a leadership team that includes former footballer McDonald Mariga, now serving as FKF Vice President.
Speaking on Monday, CS Murkomen lauded the transparent and credible election process, describing it as a pivotal moment for Kenyan football. “Over the weekend, you witnessed the election of a new football leadership. We now have a team full of energy, elected by football delegates in a fair and square manner,” he said.
Murkomen voiced confidence in the ability of Hussein and his team to address the challenges that have plagued Kenyan football for years. “I’m confident that Hussein Mohammed, McDonald Mariga, and their team will transform Kenyan football,” Murkomen said. “They are individuals I have assessed and believe we can work with to bring transparency and accountability as we propel football forward.”
The Sports CS emphasized that key priorities for the new leadership should include tackling corruption, combating match-fixing, and securing sponsorship deals to support the sport’s growth. Murkomen underlined the importance of restoring integrity within the FKF to rebuild trust with fans, players, and stakeholders.
“By emphasizing integrity, accountability, and transparency, the new team can rebuild trust and reinvigorate football in Kenya,” Murkomen added.
The election of Hussein Mohammed signals a new chapter for Kenyan football, with expectations running high among fans and stakeholders. His administration is tasked with addressing longstanding issues that have hindered the sport’s progress, including financial mismanagement and declining international performance.
Hussein inherits a federation at a crossroads, but his leadership, coupled with the expertise of Vice President McDonald Mariga and the newly elected team, presents an opportunity to chart a new course for Kenyan football.
Murkomen assured that the Ministry of Sports is ready to collaborate with FKF to achieve its goals. “The government is committed to supporting the federation in every possible way, from policy reforms to fostering partnerships that will elevate the game in Kenya,” he stated.
With a unified effort between the FKF and the government, Kenyan football fans hope this new leadership will restore the glory of the national game and pave the way for local clubs and the national team to achieve greater success on the regional and international stages.
