Tottenham’s bid for a place in the Champions League took a hit as they suffered a humiliating 6-1 defeat at the hands of Newcastle United on Sunday.
The match was effectively over within 21 minutes as Tottenham conceded five goals from Jacob Murphy, Alexander Isak, Joelinton, and Callum Wilson, leaving Harry Kane’s reply as nothing more than a consolation.
Tottenham now looks set to miss out on a place in the top four of the Premier League, as they sit six points behind Newcastle in third and Manchester United in fourth.
With no permanent manager or director of football for next season, Tottenham faces a bleak future. Interim boss Cristian Stellini took responsibility for the defeat and apologized to the fans, while Lloris accused his teammates of lacking pride.
In contrast, Newcastle is on the up, riding high on a wave that should see them qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2003. Newcastle scored their first goal in just 61 seconds and went on to dominate the match, stunning Tottenham with their finishing.
West Ham also boosted their bid to avoid relegation with a 4-0 victory against Bournemouth, with goals from Michail Antonio, Lucas Paqueta, Declan Rice, and Pablo Fornals.
