The Nairobi City Marathon, originally scheduled for May 21, has been postponed to July 2, according to a statement released by Athletics Kenya.
The decision was made after organizers discovered that another run was planned for the same day in the same area. The statement expressed the organization’s commitment to sportsmanship and charity, stating that they were happy to give the other run the day to meet its objectives.
They also apologized for any inconvenience caused to athletes, sponsors, partners, and fans of the marathon, adding that the organizers would use the extra time to stage a bigger and better event.
The course for the race remains the same, with the marathon taking place on the expressway. However, the organizers are looking to make amends at the starting point.
They have set a target of 20,000 participants for this year’s run, which is double the number of participants from the previous year.
Registration is open for online and physical entries for different categories of the marathon, including 42km, 21km, 10km, and 5km, with registration fees ranging from Sh500 to Sh1500.
Brimin Misoi and Agnes Barsosio were the winners of the inaugural race in 2022, with both breaking course records in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively.
This year, athletes will be aiming to break the records set in the previous year, with the winners receiving a six million shillings prize.
The organizers have urged all registered participants to use the extra time to prepare better for the marathon and to visit the Nairobi Marathon website to familiarize themselves with the course and the different registration categories.
