Tiger Woods Withdraws from US Open as Recovery Continues
Renowned golfer Tiger Woods has opted out of participating in the upcoming US Open as he continues to recover from right ankle surgery, according to organizers.
The 47-year-old, who holds an impressive record of 15 major championships, including three US Open titles, underwent additional surgery on his ankle in April after sustaining severe injuries in a car accident last year.
Scheduled to take place from June 15-18 at the North Course of the Los Angeles Country Club, the US Open serves as the third major tournament of the year.
However, due to his ongoing rehabilitation, Woods has made the decision to withdraw as an exempt player, as stated in the organizers’ official announcement.
During his recent appearance at the Masters in April, Woods faced challenges and eventually withdrew early in the third round, prompting the need for further medical intervention.
Although Woods has enjoyed tremendous success at Augusta National, securing five victories, his physical limitations were evident as he navigated the course with visible signs of discomfort.
Since the car crash near Los Angeles in February 2021, Woods has only participated in five tournaments, completing all 72 holes on two occasions.
His unexpected return to competitive golf occurred at last year’s Masters, where he completed four rounds, followed by his participation in the Genesis Invitational PGA Tour event at Riviera Country Club in February.
During the latter event, he expressed his intention to limit his competitive schedule, aiming to participate in all four major championships and possibly a couple of additional tournaments.
Reflecting on his recent Masters’ appearance, Woods openly acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding his future involvement in the prestigious tournament.
He confessed that he wonders each time if it will be his last opportunity to play at Augusta. Recognizing the challenges he faces in his recovery, Woods expressed gratitude for still having his right leg intact, despite its limitations.
Accepting the reality of his altered physical condition, he acknowledged that he will be unable to prepare for and participate in as many tournaments as he would like.
With his focus now on recovery and rehabilitation, Woods has made the difficult decision to forgo competing in the US Open. As he continues to navigate his future in the sport, he remains optimistic and accepting of the challenges that lie ahead.
