The Doha Diamond League meeting next month is shaping up to be an exhilarating clash between world-class athletes. Lamecha Girma, the Ethiopian runner who recently set a world indoor 3000m record, will be facing off against Timothy Cheruiyot, the former 1500m world champion, and Soufiane El Bakkali, the world and Olympic steeplechase champion.

Girma, who clocked a remarkable 7:23.81 in Lievin earlier this year to break a 25-year-old world indoor record, will be up against tough competition from Cheruiyot and El Bakkali.

Cheruiyot’s Kenyan compatriot, Ishmael Kipkirui, who is the reigning world U20 cross-country champion, will also be in the mix, along with other winners of global titles.

El Bakkali, who has been unbeaten since September 2021, sees this year as crucial in his preparation for defending his world title in Budapest. “By racing against such a strong field in this opening meeting of the Wanda Diamond League, I will see how much work I still have to do,” said El Bakkali.

The star-studded line-up doesn’t stop there, as other notable contenders include Selemon Barega of Ethiopia, the Olympic 10,000m champion, Yomif Kejelcha of Ethiopia, a two-time world indoor 3000m champion, and Oscar Chelimo of Uganda, the world 5000m bronze medallist.

With such a high-calibre field of athletes, the Doha Diamond League meeting promises to be an electrifying event, showcasing the talent and skill of these world-class runners.

Fans can expect a thrilling showdown as these athletes vie for victory and set the stage for an exciting season of track and field competitions.
