The Faldo Series Kenya Championship lived up to its billing with the best junior golfers displaying their skills at the prestigious Karen Country Club over the weekend.
A total of 68 players competed in the three-day tournament, vying for victory in their respective categories and a chance to secure tickets to the Faldo Series European Grand Final, to be held at the Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting, and Golf Club in the United Arab Emirates in November.
With an enthusiastic crowd in attendance at the Karen Country Club, the tension was palpable as the playoff unfolded. Kiragu, the first to tee off, showcased his skill with a near-perfect shot that landed on the green, approximately 30 yards from the pin.
Shah responded with an equally impressive swing, placing his shot five yards closer to the pin than Kiragu’s. Although Shah’s putt was almost flawless, it fell short by a meter. As Kiragu lined up his shot, it seemed like the playoff would extend to another hole.
However, with unwavering focus and precision, Kiragu calmly took his shot, giving it the perfect weight. The ball found the cup, setting off wild celebrations from the spectators.
Reflecting on his victory, a jubilant Kiragu expressed, “The pressure was intense in the final three holes. That’s where the real golf was played, I must admit. During the playoff, I had full confidence in my putt. I could see that the ball was destined for the centre of the cup from six feet away, and I believed in myself.”
Despite the closely contested playoff, Krish Shah showcased remarkable skill and was gracious in defeat.
The overall champion, 21-year-old Daniel Kiragu, showcased his talent, while 16-year-old Krish Shah emerged victorious in the boys 16 and under category. Shashwat Harish secured the runner-up position in the category, posting scores of 80, 76, and 76 for a total of 232.
In the girls 16 and under category, 14-year-old Bianca Ngecu claimed the top spot with scores of 80, 84, and 88, totalling 252. Audrey Gachora secured second place with scores of 87, 85, and 82, accumulating a total of 254.
The Junior Golf Foundation calendar will take a break in June and July, returning in August with a lineup of exciting events.
