UK Sport Pays Tribute to King Charles III on Coronation Day

Sports across the United Kingdom paid tribute to the new monarch on the day of King Charles III’s coronation.

Before football and cricket matches, players stood and observed the national anthem, while rugby union Premiership matches also planned similar tributes.

Special ceremonies were held at the Newmarket horse race meeting and the Badminton Horse Trials. The football tribute began with the Women’s Super League match between Arsenal and Leicester and continued with the national anthem being observed before four Premier League matches, including Manchester City v Leeds and Tottenham v Crystal Palace.

Liverpool will also play the national anthem before their match against Brentford, despite knowing some fans may have strong views against it. Cricketers also stood for God Save The King before games in the County Championship and Rachel Heyhoe Flint Trophy.

Similar scenes were witnessed at Headingley, Derby, Trent Bridge, Old Trafford, and Chester-le-Street. Racing at Newmarket started at a later time, 13:40 BST, due to the Coronation, which also caused the featured 2,000 Guineas, the first classic race of the flat season, to be put back to 16:40 BST.
