Ulinzi Starlets continued their impressive form in the Kenya Women Premier League (KWPL) with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Bunyore Starlets at Mumboha Sports Ground on Wednesday.
The visitors struck early, with Tabitha Amoit finding the back of the net in the second minute. Capitalizing on a well-placed corner kick, Amoit’s header soared past the Bunyore defense, giving Ulinzi the perfect start. Despite their spirited efforts to respond, Bunyore Starlets struggled to find an equalizer, ending the first half trailing.
The second half saw Ulinzi extend their lead through a moment of brilliance from Joy Kinglady. The midfielder unleashed a stunning long-range strike from outside the box in the 68th minute, leaving Bunyore goalkeeper Yvone Musungu with no chance. The goal not only secured victory for Ulinzi but also marked their first-ever Premier League triumph over Bunyore Starlets at Mumboha.
The passionate crowd, including fans perched on trees and others seated in the stands, watched in awe as Ulinzi dominated. Meanwhile, Bunyore’s loss means they head into the Christmas break rooted at the bottom of the KWPL table with just six points.
Ulinzi Starlets head coach Collins Ochieng commended his players for their performance but acknowledged that their strategy changes based on whether they are playing at home or away.
“These players are technically gifted. Our focus is to maintain that quality and instill a winning mentality in them,” said Ochieng.
Reflecting on their narrower margin of victory compared to their 5-0 win against Wadadia, he added, “Our game plan varies depending on the venue. Playing at home gives us an edge, but every match is like a final, and the three points are what matter most.”
On the other hand, Solomon Masika, who recently took over as Bunyore Starlets coach, praised his team’s effort despite the defeat.
“We faced an experienced side today. Most of my players are still underdogs in this league, but the fact that Ulinzi didn’t win by a bigger margin shows we’re heading in the right direction,” said Masika.
He admitted that injuries had affected his team’s game plan but remained optimistic about the future.
“We lacked depth today, which made injuries a bigger setback. While we head into the holidays on a low note, I believe we’ll come back stronger and more prepared to compete,” he added.
With four wins, five draws, and only one loss this season, Ulinzi Starlets are firmly positioned as strong contenders in the league. As they continue their campaign, the team is optimistic about challenging for the top spot when league action resumes next year. Meanwhile, Bunyore Starlets will look to regroup during the break and turn their season around in 2025.
