Ulinzi Starlets showcased their dominance in women’s football by successfully defending their Football Kenya Federation Women’s Cup title with a resounding 3-1 triumph over Nakuru City Queens at Nairobi’s Nyayo Stadium on June 4.

Having emerged as the inaugural champions in 2021, Ulinzi continued their winning streak after last year’s tournament was cancelled due to the FKF’s suspension by FIFA.

The victorious Ulinzi side, who are also the reigning Super Cup champions, walked away with a prize of Sh500,000, while Nakuru City Queens secured half of the prize money.

Star striker Mercy Airo demonstrated her exceptional skills by scoring two goals, putting Ulinzi under Joseph Mwanza’s guidance in a commanding position before halftime.

In the match’s dying moments, Neddy Atieno added a third goal, making Mercyelina Wafula’s strike a mere consolation for Nakuru City Queens.

Ulinzi immediately took control of the game, launching relentless attacks from the outset. Both Fasila Adhiambo and Ruth Wekesa missed scoring opportunities in the opening eight minutes, showcasing Ulinzi’s early dominance.

Their persistent efforts were rewarded two minutes later when Airo leapt highest to head home the opener, beating Judith Omondi at the near-post. Adhiambo’s exceptional play from the left wing added a creative spark to Ulinzi’s gameplay.

In the 19th minute, Airo further extended Ulinzi’s lead with a sensational long-range strike that hit the woodwork before finding the back of the net, igniting the crowd with excitement.

Despite Nakuru City Queens’ efforts to mount a comeback, with Melo Mulindi and Lavenda Akinyi missing clear-cut chances, Ulinzi maintained their defensive resilience.

Nakuru City Queens emerged determined in the second half, launching a spirited offensive. Their substitute, Wafula, managed to halve Ulinzi’s lead by tapping in a goal in the 48th minute, bringing the scoreline to 2-1.

However, Atieno’s stoppage time goal put the game beyond Nakuru’s reach, securing Ulinzi Starlets’ victory and solidifying their title defence.

Ulinzi’s triumph highlights their supremacy in women’s football, affirming their status as one of the dominant forces in Kenyan football.
