United States Chinese born Olympic ice skater Zhu Yi has been variously slated after failing to land a jump several times during her Olympic Debut for team China sparkling a backlash on Chinese Social media.
The 19-year –old, who renounced her US citizenship in 2018 to compete for his native country China failed to land her first combination tipple flip-tipple toe-loop jump. She decided to change her name from Beverly Zu to Zhu Yi.
Despite making efforts to compete for her native country, users fired severe attacks on her questioning why she was selected for the competition instead of someone born in China. Her performance was criticized as shameful and embarrassing and some users raised eyebrows on her patriotism and love for China.
Ms Zhu secured a score of 47.03, the lowest at the skating competition. Team China knocked out of the medal dropping from third place to fifth place after her performance.
The hashtag #ZhuYiFellDown trended on Weibo in China before it was later taken down.
Born to Chinese parents in Los Angeles, her father is a renowned computer scientist specializing in artificial intelligence. Ms Zhu is one of the several foreign born athletes competing for China at the 2022 Winter games.
