The VetLab Sports Club set the stage for the inaugural tournament of the year as the Junior Golf Foundation US Kids Local Tour teed off with an impressive turnout of 162 junior golfers.

The challenging course posed difficulties, accentuated by the lingering effects of the prolonged El Nino rains in December 2023 and January 2024, despite the promising start.

Regina Gachora, President of the Junior Golf Foundation (JGF), acknowledged the struggles faced by the young golfers, attributing their challenges to the break taken in December 2023. Gachora noted, “The players have returned from the holiday break rusty, which is expected at the beginning of the season. The demanding course, compounded by the long rains, adds to the challenge.”

Despite the initial difficulties, Gachora expressed confidence in the improvement of the players, given their foundation in the US Kids golf model. Gachora expressed confidence in the improvement of the players, given their foundation in the US Kids golf model, despite the initial difficulties.

While 20 elite players were absent from the tournament due to their participation in the All-Africa junior championships camp, Gachora highlighted the intense competition within the ranks.

She stated, “The 20 players absent have to play harder and better, knowing numerous juniors are vying for their spot. Over the next two to three years, we anticipate witnessing a much-improved group of players, as these juniors aspire to represent the national team or aim for the Olympics.”

At VetLab, Ameliah Sheikh secured victory in the girls’ 13-14 years category with a score of 14 over par 86. Yuvraj Rajput emerged victorious in the boys’ 13-14 years category with an impressive score of seven over par 79. In the boys’ 10-year category, a playoff was required to determine the winner, with Ishaan Patel ultimately breaking the tie.

The success of the VetLab tournament sets the stage for the upcoming events, with the second tournament of the US Kids local tour series scheduled at the Limuru Country Club on February 18th after a two-week break
