Usme’s Sole Goal Propels Colombia into Maiden Women’s World Cup Quarter-Final
Colombia maintained their steady progress in the Women’s World Cup as Catalina Usme’s solitary goal secured a 1-0 victory over Jamaica, propelling them into their first-ever quarter-final clash against European champions England.
After missing out on the 2019 tournament, the South American team has made remarkable strides, emerging as group leaders in Australia and even shocking world number two Germany along the way.
In a packed Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, the 25th-ranked Colombian side faced a determined and physically imposing Jamaican team that had not conceded a goal throughout the competition. Despite the tough opposition, Colombia’s relentless attacking approach under the guidance of coach Nelson Abadia paid off when Usme calmly found the back of the net in the 51st minute, cracking open a previously impregnable defence.
The goal ignited a tense encounter and sent the fervent pro-Colombian crowd into a euphoric frenzy, leaving the Reggae Girlz unable to mount a comeback.
Colombia’s victory now sets the stage for a clash against England in Sydney on Saturday, with a spot in the semi-finals up for grabs. England earned their place after a gripping penalty shootout against Nigeria.
Jamaica, ranked 43rd, arrived in Australia with modest expectations, reminiscent of Colombia’s entry to the tournament. Regardless of their defeat, the Jamaican team can depart with their heads held high, having secured clean sheets against France, Panama, and Brazil.
In an electrifying atmosphere where the crowd voiced their disdain whenever Jamaica possessed the ball, both teams started with an aggressive approach. However, the initial phase was characterized by frequent stoppages due to robust challenges, yielding limited scoring opportunities.
During the opening 20 minutes, Colombia’s Diana Ospina managed the only shot on target, though lacking the necessary power to trouble the goalkeeper.
As the South American side gained momentum, spurred on by their passionate supporters, chances began to flow, with Leicy Santos and Catalina Usme going close.
With Colombia seizing control, Jamaica resorted to physical challenges, leading to yellow cards for Chantelle Swaby and Drew Spence in a hard-fought first half.
The breakthrough arrived six minutes into the second half, orchestrated by teenage World Cup debutant Ana Guzman, who delivered a precise pass to Usme. With a single touch, Usme expertly slotted the ball home, altering the course of the match.
