Red Bull’s Max Verstappen recently shared his perspectives on the current generation of F1 cars, applauding improvements while expressing reservations.
After last year’s regulatory overhaul aimed at reintroducing ground effect and improving close-quarters racing, Verstappen acknowledged positive changes in aerodynamics.
“In 2020 and 2021, following cars was a real challenge, they were undrivable. The new regulations have made it a lot better,” Verstappen conveyed during a media interaction.
However, the Dutch driver didn’t shy away from pointing out a persistent issue – the weight of modern F1 machines. Over the years, these racing giants have gradually increased in mass due to safety enhancements and external factors like the adoption of Pirelli’s 18-inch tires.
Verstappen expressed his concern, stating, “The weight of the cars is a bit of a concern for me. Also, the general stiffness of the cars, but overall, I believe these cars have enhanced the racing experience. The racing is a bit better.”
Since the advent of the turbo hybrid era in 2014, F1 cars have become 100kg heavier. This weight gain presents challenges, especially in low-speed driving scenarios, impacting overall handling dynamics.
Verstappen remains positive about the racing quality under the current regulations. His comments come ahead of the upcoming Las Vegas Grand Prix, set to unfold on a challenging 14-turn street circuit spanning over six kilometres.
The Vegas spectacle promises top speeds reaching approximately 342 kilometres per hour on the lengthy straight, challenging the iconic Monza circuit for average speeds.
