The national men’s volleyball team “Wafalme” secured their first win of the Africa Nations Championships in Cairo, Egypt, on Wednesday evening by defeating Ghana 3-2 in a thrilling encounter.
Wafalme faced a tough start, losing the first set 25-23, but they quickly recovered, dominating the second set with a score of 25-17. However, the Ghanaians retaliated strongly, outclassing the East Africans with a score of 25-16 in the third set.
Kenya, determined to make amends for their earlier losses to Cameroon and Libya, mounted a strong comeback in the penultimate set, securing a convincing 25-17 win. The match reached its climax in the fifth set, which turned out to be a nail-biting affair. Gideon Tarus’ charges managed to narrowly edge it with a score of 15-11, sealing their victory.
Wafalme began their continental campaign on a less favourable note, suffering a 3-1 defeat to Cameroon on Monday night. They followed this with a straight-sets loss to Libya in their second Pool C encounter on Tuesday.
In another match of the day, Libya extended their unbeaten streak in Pool C by defeating Cameroon 3-1.
Elsewhere, in a clash of East African teams, Tanzania suffered a heavy defeat in straight sets at the hands of Tunisia, while Chad displayed their dominance by thrashing Mali with the same scoreline.
In Pool D action, Senegal asserted their superiority by defeating Rwanda 3-0, while Morocco delivered a convincing performance by defeating Gambia in straight sets.
Wafalme’s hard-fought victory against Ghana marks a positive turn in their campaign at the Africa Nations Championships, and they will aim to build on this momentum in their upcoming matches.
