Key players veteran libero Sam Juma and outside hitter Sila Kipruto have been omitted from the final Wafalme Stars squad for the upcoming CAVB Zone V tournament in Cairo, Egypt, with Juma sidelined due to an injury sustained during last week’s training.
The 14-man squad sees the return of Nicholas Matui, Elphas Makuto, and Levi Ogutu, who missed the 2023 African Cup of Nations in Egypt. New additions to the squad include Hudson Kipchumba from GSU, Wilson Cheruiyot from Equity, and Dennis Esokon from Kenya Prisons, all vying for their debut on the continental stage in Ghana.
Training commenced two weeks ago at Nyayo National Stadium in preparation for the tournament, which also doubles as qualifiers for the African Games scheduled for March in Accra, Ghana.
Brian Melly, GSU setter, will captain the 14-man squad under the guidance of head coach Gideon Tarus and assistant coaches Elisha Aliwa and Denis Mokua.
Departing on Tuesday for the tournament scheduled from January 26-28, Wafalme Stars will be joined by Malkia Strikers.
Speaking at the squad unveiling on Monday at Nyayo National Stadium gymnasium, KVF president Charles Nyaberi encouraged Wafalme to aim for victory, recognizing the potential to overcome Egypt. He also urged dropped players to stay motivated, emphasizing future opportunities.
The top two teams from the Zone V tournament will secure slots at the continental showpiece. Wafalme Stars, having participated in the African Games twice, last claimed bronze in Maputo, Mozambique, in 2011.
