Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League champions Gor Mahia have parted ways with head coach Leo Neiva following a tough four-match winless run that has left the club struggling in the league standings.
The club announced the decision in a statement, citing a need to refocus on their long-term vision and implement a leadership change.
The club’s statement expressed gratitude for Neiva’s hard work and dedication during his tenure but confirmed that they had activated a clause allowing for immediate termination of the Brazilian’s contract. “The club extends its gratitude to Mr. Neiva for his commitment, hard work, and contributions to Gor Mahia. However, following a thorough evaluation, management has determined a change is necessary to align with the club’s long-term vision,” the statement read.
In the interim, Gor Mahia legends Zedekiah “Zico” Otieno and Michael Nam will take over as head coaches, tasked with preparing the team for the critical upcoming matches while the search for Neiva’s permanent replacement begins. “The club will seek a new head coach who embodies Gor Mahia’s values and aspirations, bringing fresh energy and strategic insight to the team,” the club added.
Neiva, 46, joined Gor Mahia after the departure of North Irishman Jonathan McKinstry, who left to coach the Gambia national team. Despite his impressive resume, which includes stints with Uganda’s Vipers FC and Sudan’s Al Merreikh, Neiva’s tenure has been turbulent.
His last role at Vipers ended abruptly after 156 days, following a mixed record of three wins, one draw, and a single loss.
Under Neiva, Gor Mahia have slipped to 12th place in the FKF Premier League standings, sitting on eight points with two matches in hand.
This weekend, the pressure continues as Gor Mahia faces off against arch-rivals AFC Leopards in the highly anticipated Mashemeji Derby on November 24. AFC Leopards are also struggling, coming off a winless run of their own since their recent loss to Murang’a Seal.
As Gor Mahia fans await the club’s next steps, all eyes are on Otieno and Nam to steady the ship while management works to identify a new leader capable of reviving K’Ogalo’s fortunes and returning the team to its winning ways.
