Angela Okutoyi, the Wimbledon Open Doubles junior champion, credits her mental resilience for a thrilling victory over Switzerland’s Sophie Luescher at the ongoing International Tennis Federation Women’s World Tour tournament at Karen Country Club.
Okutoyi acknowledged her opponent’s increasing frustration during the two-and-a-half-hour match and capitalized on it to secure the win.
“I felt like that was a headstart for me, and I pumped myself up. She was showing weakness, and I told myself not to react the same way but to keep myself going. She was breaking, and I felt that I had to take advantage of that,” Okutoyi said.
Starting with a challenging first set, Okutoyi made several errors and lost 6-2. The situation worsened in the second set, trailing 4-1 before staging a remarkable comeback to level it at 4-4 and eventually triumphing 7-5.
Reflecting on the twists in the game, Okutoyi considered the first and second sets as wake-up calls to regroup.
“I was 4-1 down in the second set as well, and the match could’ve literally finished from there. But I just told myself that I am a fighter and that I’ve worked so hard to just lose like that. I told myself that I need to fight; if I lost this game, I would have been so pissed with myself,” she explained.
She expressed gratitude to the supportive crowd at the venue, acknowledging their role in boosting her morale during challenging moments.
“It felt really nice to see a lot of people come out to support me. That really gave me a lot of encouragement, especially when I was 4-1 down. That really pumped me up…they were really behind me and gave me an extra boost,” Okutoyi said.
Securing her ticket to the next round, Okutoyi emphasized learning lessons from Tuesday’s match, particularly focusing on staying physically and mentally active for optimal performance in upcoming games.
