Yoane Wissa’s equalizer secured a 1-1 draw for the Democratic Republic of Congo against Zambia in their Africa Cup of Nations opener.
Kings Kangwa had given Zambia the lead in San-Pedro, exploiting a misjudgment by Congolese goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi.
Wissa, the Brentford striker, swiftly responded with a close-range finish, leveling the score before the half-hour mark. The draw followed Group F favorites Morocco’s 3-0 victory over Tanzania in the same stadium.
Zambia, under coach Avram Grant, made their AFCON return, aiming for their first win since their surprising 2012 triumph. Congo, led by Sebastien Desabre, will face Morocco next, while Zambia meets Tanzania.
