World Athletics has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of former world junior 3,000m steeplechase silver medalist Edward Kiplagat, known as Benjamin.
The Kenyan-born athlete, who later represented Uganda, was found murdered in Eldoret’s Kimumu Estate, with knife wounds on the neck.
World Athletics conveyed their condolences, stating, “We send our deepest condolences to his friends, family, teammates, and fellow athletes. Our thoughts are with them all at this difficult time.”
The police reported that the athlete’s body was discovered on Sunday with neck injuries, and on Monday, two suspects, including a boda boda rider, were arrested. The motive appeared to be criminal, with the theft of a mobile phone and money from the athlete. Kiplagat had a successful athletic career, winning the 2008 World Junior 3,000m steeplechase silver medal.
He also represented Uganda in various international competitions, including the 2010 Commonwealth Games and the 2012 Olympic Games. The tragic incident has shocked the athletics community, and investigations are ongoing to apprehend any other individuals involved.
