World Steeplechase Champion Jeruto Suspended Over Doping

Posted on

Kenyan-born steeplechase world champion Norah Jeruto has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) due to an anti-doping violation.

Jeruto, who switched her allegiance to Kazakhstan, won the gold medal in the women’s 3,000 metres steeplechase at the 2022 world championships in Eugene, setting a championship record and registering the third-fastest time in history.

In a statement on Twitter, the AIU announced that Jeruto has been suspended “for the use of a Prohibited Substance/Method (ABP)”.

ABP refers to the Athlete’s Biological Passport, which monitors an athlete’s blood and urine samples over time to detect any irregularities that may indicate doping.

The 27-year-old distance runner has been issued a notice of the charge by the AIU. Jeruto, who also claimed the Diamond League gold in the same event in 2021, did not compete in the Tokyo Olympics as she was serving her change of allegiance period.

The AIU will further investigate the matter to determine the appropriate course of action.
