Zetech Sparks Coach Maurice Obilo Confident for Next KNBL Season
Zetech Sparks’ head coach, Maurice Obilo, is highly optimistic about his team’s performance in the upcoming Kenya National Basketball League (KNBL) season.
Building on their impressive second-place finish in the previous season, the team aims to thrive in the league.
In their debut season, Zetech Sparks had a fairytale run, securing the runners-up position after a 3-0 loss to the formidable Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) in the 2022/23 finals at the Makande Gymnasium in Mombasa.
Coach Obilo expressed his satisfaction with the season’s performance despite facing challenges. The team’s hard work paid off as they achieved remarkable success, fulfilling their aspirations.
As the pre-season training commences, Coach Obilo’s focus is on enhancing individual player skills. He believes in developing each player’s basketball skills before transitioning to group training. The team aims to use this month-long preparation period to refine their abilities before the official games begin.
In an unconventional move, Coach Obilo has decided not to recruit new external players. Instead, he plans to select talents from the school’s development team. This decision reflects his faith in the potential and abilities of the players within the school’s program.
Recognizing the girls’ achievements and progress, Coach Obilo emphasized the significance of reaching the finals in their debut season.
Their remarkable journey stands as a special accomplishment that sets them apart in the basketball league. Despite their short time in the league, Zetech Sparks has achieved what many other institutions have struggled to accomplish.
Zetech’s remarkable journey to the premier league finals puts them in an exclusive league, joining Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) as the second university since independence to achieve such a feat.
The team’s determination and commitment to excellence have propelled them to the forefront of the basketball scene, setting high expectations for the upcoming season.
