Zetech Sparks Triumph Over Swords to Clinch U23 Sterling Cup Championship
Zetech Sparks emerged victorious in the U23 Sterling Cup Championship, overpowering Strathmore University with a 68-28 victory at Nyayo Gymnasium on Sunday night.
Led by standout player Veronica Ayoo, who contributed 12 points, the Sparks displayed an unstoppable performance throughout the game, securing a resounding 40-point lead over their opponents.
Head coach Maurice Obilo expressed his delight with the team’s performance, emphasizing the significance of this win as they enter their pre-season training.
“We are thrilled because in the five times, we have participated in the Sterling Cup, we have always finished second. This is our first time winning it, and I am extremely proud of the girls,” said Obilo after the game. He added, “This win is particularly significant as we have just started our training lightly last week. Now, as we commence our proper training, the girls will be motivated to work even harder.”
Zetech, with a majority of their players being U23 and having featured prominently in the Premier League regular season, fielded a strong team led by Madina Okot and Mary Lisa Omondi. Both players recently represented Kenya and secured a silver medal at the Africa Beach Games in Tunisia.
The opening quarter was closely contested, with Zetech narrowly taking the lead with a score of 14-12. However, under the guidance of experienced coach Ronnie Owino, Strathmore struggled in the second quarter, committing numerous turnovers that Zetech capitalized on.
Despite the efforts of Margaret Nerea and Alexandra Adala, Strathmore could only manage six points in the entire quarter, while Zetech accumulated 25.
Zetech continued their dominant display in the second half, extending their lead to 39-18 at halftime. With a comfortable advantage, Coach Obilo had the opportunity to rotate his squad, providing rest for regular players such as Lisa, Okot, and Minayo, while the rest of the team fought hard.
In the battle for third place, Africa Nazarene University staged a comeback to defeat Olympic High School’s Lady Rebels 46-41.
The tournament, aimed at identifying and nurturing young basketball talent, awarded Zetech Sparks with a prize of Ksh100,000, while Strathmore received Sh50,000 for finishing in second place. Africa Nazarene University took home Sh20,000 to secure third place.
The victory solidifies Zetech Sparks’ position as a formidable force in U23 basketball and sets a strong foundation as they embark on their upcoming pre-season training.
