Zimbabwe secured a last-ball victory against Ireland as the visitors’ fightback fell just short in a thrilling T20 series opener in Harare.
Ireland set a target of 147-8, and in the hosts’ final over, they needed nine runs, ultimately winning with two runs from Blessing Muzarabani off the last delivery.
Zimbabwe’s captain, Sikandar Raza, played a crucial role, taking three wickets and scoring 65 to lead their run chase. Mark Adair made history for Ireland by becoming the first bowler from the country to reach 100 T20 international wickets. Adair also contributed with two crucial wickets as Ireland staged a late rally with the ball.
Other standout performers for Ireland included Josh Little, Craig Young, and Barry McCarthy, each taking two wickets. Ireland’s former captain, Andrew Balbirnie, top-scored with 32, supported by Gareth Delany (26 not out) and Harry Tector (24).
Raza received support with the bat from Wesley Madhevere (25) and wicketkeeper Clive Madande (20).
The closely contested match sets the stage for two more T20 contests between the teams, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at the Harare Sports Club.
Following the T20 series, three one-day games are set to take place at the same venue on December 13, 15, and 17.
