Mali seized the top spot in Group E of the Africa Cup of Nations by capitalizing on an early opportunity to defeat South Africa 2-0 on Tuesday.
The victory came after Percy Tau missed a penalty for South Africa, allowing Mali to take the lead in the standings ahead of Namibia on goal difference.
Mali’s captain, Hamari Traore, broke the deadlock after an hour, reacting swiftly to score from close range after a curling free kick from Sekou Koita. Lassine Sinayoko extended the lead six minutes later, capitalizing on a through ball to score from close range.
South Africa had an opportunity to take the lead after being awarded a penalty in the 18th minute. However, Percy Tau’s shot went well off target, squandering the chance. Despite Tau forcing a good save from Djigui Diarra and dominating first-half exchanges, Mali showcased defensive resilience.
Mali had two excellent chances soon after the break, with Koita and Amadou Haidara missing the target. However, the two goals from Sinayoko and Traore solidified Mali’s position in the group.
In the other Group E game in Korhogo, Namibia scored a late winner through winger Deon Hotto to upset Tunisia.
Looking ahead, Mali is set to face Tunisia on Saturday, while South Africa will take on Namibia on Sunday, both matches to be held in Korhogo.
