The Wafalme Stars, Kenya’s national men’s volleyball team, are focused on securing a spot in the Africa Games as they embark on the qualifiers beginning this Saturday in Cairo, Egypt.
The 13th edition of the Africa Games is scheduled to take place in Accra, Ghana, from March 8-23. Facing the formidable presence of Egypt, the nine-time African champions, in the qualifiers, head coach Gideon Tarus exudes confidence and resilience.
Tarus acknowledges past challenges in reception and defense but emphasizes significant improvements. With a squad of talented young players groomed since their school and college days, he believes the team is well-prepared. Tarus remains undaunted by the tough competition, stating that aside from maintaining a fighting spirit, there are no major challenges that could lead to a loss against Egypt.
Team captain Brian Meli shares the coach’s optimism, citing a previous victory against Egypt in Rwanda with a scoreline of 3-2. Meli expresses confidence in a successful outing, considering Egypt’s stature as a powerhouse in African volleyball.
The anticipation is high, with both coach and captain aiming for qualification. The teams will then embark on their journey to Cairo on January 20.
