Kenya’s Under-20 rugby team started the Barthes Cup tournament with an impressive 44-20 victory over Uganda at Nyayo National Stadium in the capital city.
Assistant coach Kevin Wambua, who joined the team’s technical bench to assist with preparations, praised the team for executing the coach’s tactics well and securing a comfortable win.
Wambua noted that the team needs to work on finishing, as they lost a few tries due to handling errors at the edge.
Looking ahead to the semi-final against Namibia, Wambua emphasized the need for the team to be tight when their ball is carried into contact and to play in the right zones, as Namibia is a physical team.
He also cautioned the team against getting ahead of themselves by thinking about the final or other teams in the tournament.
Wambua emphasized the importance of focusing on one game at a time, with the next game being against Namibia. He acknowledged that Zimbabwe and Namibia are strong teams that have been together for a while and gelled together, but stressed that the team is solely focused on the Namibia game.
