Dagoretti High School emerged victorious in the Nairobi region secondary school games as they reclaimed the football title with a stunning 1-0 win over reigning champions Highway Secondary School.
The finals, held at Moi Girls Nairobi, witnessed Dhour Kang’s long-range shot in the 22nd minute securing the decisive goal for Dagoretti, marking their return to the top spot they last held in 2019.
Dagoretti showcased their dominance in the first half, posing a constant threat in Highways’ 18-yard box and forcing keeper Dennis Ochul to make several impressive saves to keep his team in the game. Despite Highway’s charged efforts in the second half, Dagoretti’s resolute defending denied them any chance of a comeback.
Head coach Joseph Makokha expressed his admiration for his team’s performance, stating, “We were well prepared for them. We knew it would be tough. We are heading to the national championships, and we will give it our all.”
Highway’s coach, Beldine Adhiambo, who also serves as the Harambee Starlets U-18 head coach, praised her team’s efforts despite the defeat, acknowledging the role luck can play in football: “I have a good team. Sometimes luck counts, and today it was not our day.”
In the girls’ final, Dagoretti Mixed successfully defended their title by defeating Olympic High School 2-0. Philah Khayesi, a first-year student, stole the limelight with a brace in the first half, propelling Dagoretti to the national championships.
Head coach Joseph Orao commended his players’ performance while urging them to be more clinical in front of goal as they aim for the national title.
Ruthimitu triumphed over bitter rivals Hospital Hill in the volleyball finals, winning 3-1 (25-22, 26-28, 25-21, 25-19) and successfully defending their boys’ regional title. Head coach Gideon Njine promised a thrilling display at the upcoming national championships.
Soweto emerged victorious in the girls’ category, securing their place to represent the Nairobi region at the national championships.
In rugby sevens, Upper Hill outclassed Lenana School with a 14-12 victory, securing the region’s title. Both teams secured spots at the national championships, scheduled to take place from August 6th to 12th at Kakamega High School.
