For the first time in history, the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has made it to an African Championship final, securing a landmark victory against Rwanda Energy Group (REG) with a score of 101-97. This achievement marks KPA as the first Kenyan team to reach the final of a FIBA Africa clubs competition.
In a thrilling encounter that echoed their Zone V qualifiers final, KPA faced off against REG and emerged victorious. The team, led by Captain Natalie Mwangale, showcased exceptional skill and determination. Mwangale’s stellar performance included scoring 8 three-point shots and achieving a rare double-double with 26 points, 13 assists, and just one rebound short of a triple-double.
Victoria Reynolds contributed significantly with 26 points, while Hilda Indasi, Rita Aluoch, and Madina Okot all reached double digits with 15, 14, and 12 points, respectively.
Coach Antony Ojukwu expressed his satisfaction with the team’s execution of the game plan, praising their resilience and ability to make necessary adjustments. Despite REG’s attempts to narrow the gap, KPA maintained focus and control, securing a well-deserved victory.
The match saw KPA take an early lead at 8-2, only to face a spirited response from REG. Both teams engaged in a back-and-forth, with KPA ultimately leading 54-47 at halftime. The third quarter witnessed a determined effort from REG, closing in on KPA’s lead.
In a dramatic final period, REG fought valiantly, trailing by just five points at 89-84 with five minutes remaining and narrowing it down to three at 95-92 with three minutes left.
Madina Okot’s crucial score extended KPA’s lead to 97-92, but REG responded with determination, making it a two-point game at 99-97. In the closing moments, KPA held their ground, and two costly fouls from REG allowed KPA to secure the win and advance to the final.
REG’s Destiney Promise Philoxy delivered an outstanding performance with a game-high 41 points and seven assists. Tiffany Mitchell and Nia Clouden contributed 26 and 17 points, respectively.
Coach Ojukwu praised his team’s adherence to the game plan and expressed confidence in their ability to maintain momentum in the final. KPA’s historic achievement in reaching the African Championship final reflects their dedication and skill on the basketball court.
