Manchester United defeated Manchester City 2-1 at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon..
United suffered a heavy 6-3 defeat in the first Manchester derby of the season at the Etihad in October and that scoreline was made to look better by two late goals from Anthony Martial, who started today’s match, despite being a pre-game doubt.
Martial was ineffective in the first half, though, as both sides looked to break the deadlock. He was brought off at half-time, with Antony replacing him, but it was the visitors who drew first blood through Jack Grealish in the 58th minute.
Although City looked comfortable after taking the lead, the Old Trafford crowd urged United to respond and Bruno Fernandes found an equaliser in the 78th minute, which was incredibly followed by a goal from Marcus Rashford moments later.
United are now just one point behind City in the Premier League table.
Guardiola’s post-match interview
Guardiola is not happy with United’s equaliser.
“The game was really good, played really good,” he said “Our levels we played vs them all the time, they are an incredible threat with the transitions and counter attacks. I congratulate the team. Proud to come here and play with this personality. They run behind us, expect one actions and punish us in the transitions.
“Rashford is offside, Bruno Fernandes no. [Whether] intervenes Rashford or not, he distracts our keeper and our central defenders. I don’t know the rule. I know how we play.
“In the first half [we had control] except five or ten minutes because our full-backs were not in the right position. Our half was really good, in this stadium you have to do it. We miss a little bit our threat upfront, our players upfront, we were a bit disconnected. It’s not easy when they follow Man to Man. Switch of plays, our full-backs are close to wingers. We make a fantastic game considering the quality of the opponent.
“I don’t care if the Premier League and Carabao Cup we cannot win, we have won a lot. It’s not a problem. Problem is behaviour, perform like we have done. Carabao Cup is out, it doesn’t matter, we didn’t perform how we are. Today we perform. Now, don’t be distracted what happened today in the first goal, Focus on Spurs in a few days.”
