Jonathan McKinstry, the head coach of Gor Mahia, is urging his team to approach their upcoming match against Tusker with a sense of caution, despite their opponent’s recent lackluster form. These two Kenyan Premier League powerhouses are gearing up for a highly-anticipated showdown at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday.
McKinstry emphasized that Tusker has proven to be a formidable adversary in the past, and he anticipates a tough match. He stated, “We can only underrate them at our own peril. It is not lost on us that they are the immediate former champions, and their current squad boasts a wealth of experience.”
Nevertheless, the Irish coach remains optimistic about Gor Mahia’s prospects in the encounter. He called on his team to replicate the outstanding character they displayed in their last meeting with arch-rivals AFC Leopards.
“We are entering the match as favourites based on our current position in the league. We just need to exhibit the same level of commitment we displayed in the Mashemeji derby, and we will be good to go,” McKinstry remarked.
Gor Mahia currently holds the second spot in the league standings with 12 points, trailing leaders Posta Rangers by four points. McKinstry believes they are strategically positioned to challenge for their 21st title.
“Our ultimate goal is to reach the top of the table because that will give us an edge over our opponents,” he emphasized.
On the other side, Tusker’s head coach, Robert Matano, acknowledged that his team is working diligently to address the issues that have affected their campaign thus far.
Despite their recent struggles, which have left them in seventh place on the league table with eight points, Matano urged their fans to remain patient.
Following a disappointing 1-0 loss to KPL returnees Shabana, Tusker is heading into their next fixture burdened by the defeat.
Matano stated, “We were disappointed after the last match’s loss to Shabana, but I have made it clear to the players that suffering a second consecutive loss would put us in a precarious position.”
He added, “Our agreement with the players is that we will sideline anyone who fails to show total commitment in the upcoming fixtures, including the next one against Gor.”
Matano is confident in his team’s depth and their ability to challenge the defending champions. He stressed, “What makes you think we can’t beat them? Nobody should underestimate us just because we lost to Shabana. We can beat them, and we will beat them if the players follow instructions.”
