Kenya Prisons continued their strong opening in the Kenya Volleyball Federation National Men’s League with impressive back-to-back victories over Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) on Friday at Kamukunji Grounds, Nyeri County.
The defending champions first took down KPA 3-1 in a match that tested their resilience, as both sides went point-for-point in a close contest. Prisons eventually sealed the win with set scores of 25-20, 24-26, 25-23, and 25-23.
Head coach Dennis Mokua praised his team’s early success, expressing satisfaction with the five points gained against two formidable opponents. “Starting the season on the right note is crucial,” Mokua said. “I’m proud of my boys and confident we’ll keep this momentum heading into the second leg.”
Elsewhere, Trail Blazers bounced back from their opening loss to Prisons with consecutive wins, sweeping Kenya Army 3-0 before overcoming AP Kenya 3-1. Equity Bank also made an impact, defeating newcomers Base Yetu in straight sets, while Prisons Rift Valley claimed a 3-1 victory over KAPU. In a dominant performance, KPA later defeated Kenya Army 3-0, easing the pressure on coach James Ontere.
The women’s league also delivered high-stakes action. Former champions Kenya Pipeline completed a successful weekend with a hard-fought 3-0 win over Post Bank. After a challenging first set that ended 25-23, the Oilers, led by new coach Geoffrey Omondi, settled into rhythm with a 25-21 win in the second. The final set was a battle, with Post Bank pushing Pipeline into extra points, but the Oilers ultimately secured a thrilling 32-30 victory.
Other women’s matches saw DCI overpower Maratha in straight sets, while Kenya Prisons similarly triumphed over Young Spikers with a decisive 3-0. Kenya Army closed out the day with a 3-0 win over Vihiga Volleyball Club.
As the Kamukunji Grounds tournament continues through the weekend, attention turns to the highly anticipated Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga’s Cup, promising even more exciting showdowns in both men’s and women’s categories.
