Faith Kipyegon, Kenya’s illustrious middle-distance runner, once again captivated the world with a record-breaking performance at the Paris Diamond League.
Kipyegon shattered the women’s 1500m world record, clocking an astonishing time of 3:49.04 and securing the top podium spot. Hot on her heels was Australia’s Jessica Hull, who set a personal best of 3:50.83, and Great Britain’s Laura Muir, who also achieved a personal best of 3:53.79 to take third place.
This remarkable feat marks the fourth world record broken by the two-time Olympic 1500m gold medalist in less than a year, underscoring her dominance in the sport.
Post-race, Kipyegon shared her unwavering confidence and the journey back from injury, “Breaking the world record is an incredible feeling. It’s a testament to my direction towards the Paris Olympics. Despite the challenges of injury and recovery, I’ve managed to return stronger. The trials revealed my potential, and I’m thrilled to have realized it once more,” stated the world 5000m titleholder.
Kipyegon’s season began with a bang, as she posted a time of 3:53.98 at the national Olympic trials in Paris last month, signaling her return to form after overcoming injuries.
She acknowledged her competitor Hull’s role in her achievement, “The pursuit of excellence is a shared journey. Jessica’s formidable presence drove me to this world record. It’s a reminder that in competition, anything can happen, but staying focused and running my race was key,” Kipyegon reflected.
Previously, in June of the preceding year, Kipyegon clocked 3:49.11 at the Florence Diamond League, surpassing Ethiopian Genzebe Dibaba as the fastest woman ever in the 1500m event. She continued her record-setting spree with a 14:05.20 in the women’s 5000m at the Paris Diamond League, a record which Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay later bested.
As the current world record holder in the mile with a time of 4:07.64 set at the Monaco Diamond League, Kipyegon is poised to represent Kenya in the women’s 5000m at the upcoming Paris Games.
Kipyegon expressed gratitude for the enthusiastic crowd support and shared her aspirations for the Paris Games, “The vibrant cheers fuel our spirits and propel us to the finish line. Despite the fear from my injury, the support of my team and the fans has been my strength. I’m eagerly anticipating competing in both the 1500m and 5000m events in Paris,” she conveyed.
Susan Ejore, another Kenyan athlete, is gearing up for her Olympic debut, having finished sixth with a personal best of 3:57.26, adding to the nation’s pride in its exceptional athletes.
