Liverpool Football Club has finalized a £55m deal to acquire midfielder Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton, securing the Argentine playmaker on a five-year contract.
Mac Allister played a pivotal role in Brighton’s impressive sixth-place finish in the Premier League last season, which secured their first-ever qualification for European competition.
During his time at Brighton, the 24-year-old showcased his talent, scoring 20 goals in 112 appearances for the Seagulls. Additionally, he played a crucial role in Argentina’s triumph in the 2022 World Cup.
Expressing his delight at the move, Mac Allister said, “It feels amazing. It’s a dream come true, and I can’t wait to get started. I wanted to be here from the first day of pre-season, so it’s great that everything is finalized. I’m eagerly anticipating meeting my new teammates.”
Reflecting on his successful year, which included the World Cup victory and Brighton’s achievements, Mac Allister now shifts his focus to Liverpool. “Now it’s time to think about Liverpool and strive to become a better player and a better human being every day,” he added.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been seeking midfield reinforcements following the departures of James Milner, Naby Keita, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain this summer.
Despite their interest in Borussia Dortmund’s young English talent Jude Bellingham, Liverpool was unable to secure his signature as Real Madrid agreed to a fee of 103 million euros (£88.5m) for the midfielder.
Mac Allister initially joined Brighton from Argentinos Juniors in January 2019 but immediately returned to the Buenos Aires club on loan. He has represented Argentina on 16 occasions and played a pivotal role during their successful World Cup campaign, particularly in the final against France.
“I have always expressed my desire to win more trophies since lifting the World Cup, and I believe that this club will help me achieve that,” Mac Allister expressed. “Winning trophies is the objective when you are at a big club like Liverpool. I can sense the magnitude of this club, the players, the staff, everyone involved. I’m genuinely thrilled and excited to play for this club.”
