Manchester United took a major step towards their first Women’s Super League title with a convincing 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Leigh Sports Village in the women’s super league title race on Sunday.
Marc Skinner’s side was in control throughout the match and demonstrated why they are now considered favourites for the WSL trophy this season. The victory extended their lead at the top to six points over Manchester City, who are now effectively out of the title race after a surprising 2-1 defeat to Liverpool.
Leah Galton opened the scoring for United in the first half, followed by a goal from Alessia Russo. The hosts went into the break with a comfortable two-goal lead.
After the restart, Nikita Parris made it three for United after Galton’s cross was not properly dealt with by Spurs’ defence.
Despite the convincing victory, Chelsea could still overtake United if they win their three games in hand, as they currently trail by seven points. However, United will be pleased to have secured another important win in their pursuit of the WSL title.
Chelsea put on a dominant display in their Women’s Super League match against Everton, winning 7-0 at Kingsmeadow and sending a clear message to their title rivals Manchester United.
The Blues took control early on, with goals from Guro Reiten, Sam Kerr, Pernille Harder, Sophie Ingle, and Jessie Fleming putting them 5-0 ahead before halftime. Harder scored again in the 81st minute, and Erin Cuthbert added a seventh goal in stoppage time to seal the emphatic victory.
The win puts Emma Hayes’ team in pole position to retain their WSL title if they can win their remaining four matches of the season. Meanwhile, the result was a disappointment for Everton, who remain in sixth place with 27 points from 19 games.
Manchester City’s title hopes were dealt a huge blow after suffering a surprise 2-1 defeat to Liverpool in the Women’s Super League. Natasha Dowie opened the scoring for The Reds, but Lauren Hemp equalized with a header before the break.
However, Missy Bo Kearns scored a fantastic winner to secure the victory for Liverpool and leave City six points behind league leaders Manchester United with only two games left to play.
The loss effectively ends their chances of winning the title and the focus will now shift to securing a top-three finish and qualification for next season’s Champions League.
Aston Villa dealt a major blow to Reading’s hopes of avoiding relegation from the Women’s Super League with a dominant 5-0 victory at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.
Rachel Daly was the star of the show, opening the scoring in the 14th minute with a clinical finish before setting up Alisha Lehmann to make it 2-0 just before halftime.
Kirsty Hanson then added a third for the visitors after a neat exchange with Daly, who went on to score two more goals to complete her hat-trick. The result leaves Reading rooted to the bottom of the table, two points behind Leicester City, who have played a game less. Meanwhile, Aston Villa climbed to fifth in the standings.
Brighton boosted their chances of avoiding relegation from the WSL with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over West Ham, thanks to Kayleigh Green’s well-placed header from Katie Robinson’s cross in the 57th minute.
The Seagulls have climbed to ninth in the table, five points ahead of bottom-placed Reading and with a game in hand, providing a significant buffer in the relegation battle.
On the other hand, West Ham’s fate appears to be secure, as they are six points ahead of Reading with just two games left to play, and their inferior goal difference to the Royals means they are unlikely to be overhauled in the standings.
