The Sakaja Super Cup got off to an exciting start at Police Sacco Stadium in Nairobi on Sunday, with Maroon FC and Mukuru Combined securing wins in their opening matches.
Mukuru Combined staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Creative Hands 6-2 in a thrilling Slum Derby.
Despite initially falling behind, Alphan Muthoka’s outstanding performance saw him net four goals, with additional contributions from Dennis Aloo and an own goal by Daudi Anami, propelling Mukuru into the lead in their quest for the tournament title. Caleb Abuya and Isaac Mukobi managed to pull back a couple of goals for Creative Hands.
For his outstanding display, Alphan Muthoka was awarded the match ball by tournament patron, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.
In another contest, Kenya Army side Maroon FC dominated South C United with a 3-0 victory. Maroon’s first goal came courtesy of an own goal by Eric Sifa, who inadvertently deflected a Raymond Omondi shot into the net in the 17th minute.
Brian Omondi extended the lead with a header in the 66th minute, and Kennedy Nderitu sealed the victory by dribbling past Sifa and slotting the ball home in the 85th minute.
In the tournament’s opening match, Nairobi County Assembly Sergent at Arms, Steve Mwangi, secured a 2-1 victory against the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK).
Mwangi opened the scoring for the County Assembly in the 21st minute, with Steve Ayoo levelling the score for the journalists with a second-half strike.
Mwangi ultimately secured the win for the City Hall-based team from the penalty spot after SJAK’s goalkeeper fouled Brian Yobra in the box.
