In the realm of fast-paced indoor sports, futsal shines as a thrilling and skilful game that combines the finesse of football with the intensity of indoor competition. With its growing popularity worldwide, futsal has captured the hearts of players and fans alike. In this article, we delve into the captivating world of futsal, exploring its origins, rules, and unique characteristics that set it apart from traditional football.
Origins and History
Futsal originated in Uruguay in the 1930s when Juan Carlos Ceriani devised a version of football played on a smaller indoor court. The name “futsal” is derived from the Spanish phrase “fútbol sala,” meaning “indoor football.” Over the years, futsal has evolved into a distinct sport with its own set of rules and governing bodies.
Court and Equipment
Futsal is played on a hard court surface, typically indoors, with dimensions of approximately 40m by 20m. The playing area is surrounded by walls or boards, similar to those seen in indoor hockey or basketball. The game is played with a smaller and heavier ball compared to traditional football, promoting quick and precise ball control.
Team and Players
Each team consists of five players, including a goalkeeper. Substitutions are allowed throughout the game, providing an opportunity for all team members to actively participate. Futsal demands agility, technique, and strategic play, as the smaller court size necessitates quick decision-making and close ball control.
Rules and Gameplay
Futsal follows a set of rules that differ from those of traditional football. Some key distinctions include:
Each team shall be comprised of five starting players, including the goalkeeper, and one of
them shall be the captain.
A match may not start if the teams do not have at least four players. It may not continue
either if a team is left with three players or fewer.
Each team may register a maximum of 12 players, of which 5 shall begin the match and 7 shall
stay at the bench prepared to enter the pitch.
Limited goalkeeper area: The goalkeeper can only touch the ball inside a designated area, promoting outfield player involvement.
Accumulated fouls: Teams are penalized with a free-kick when they commit a certain number of accumulated fouls.
The uniform of players shall consist of a jersey with long or short sleeves, shorts without
pockets, long or three-quarters stockings up to the knees, and sports shoes made of canvas or soft
leather with plain soles made of rubber, plastic or similar materials. (NO BOOTS WITH STUDS)
They may use elastic or orthopaedic elements, suspenders, protectors, and shin guards, which shall
be completely covered by the stocking and be made of appropriate material (rubber, plastic or
similar materials) and shall provide a reasonable degree of protection.
Duration of the Match
The match shall last twenty (20) effective minutes and shall be timed, divided into two equal
half-times with a half-time interval of three minutes (3MIN’) between them.
Each team has the right to request a time-out of one (1) minute per half-time. Requests for
time-out shall be granted by the timekeeper when the ball is out of play.
The request shall be made in the following order: Coaching Staff shall request the timekeeper and the
captain, to the referee.
Excitement and Skill
Futsal is renowned for its fast-paced nature, technical brilliance, and goal-filled encounters. The smaller court encourages close ball control, intricate passing, and lightning-quick transitions. Players must showcase their agility, agility, and tactical awareness to outwit opponents in this thrilling sport.
