Brazilian winger Vinicius Junior expressed his growing disillusionment with football due to the persistent racial abuse he has endured while playing in Spain, revealing his sentiments during an emotional media appearance on Monday.
The Real Madrid forward has been subjected to racial insults from opposing fans on multiple occasions, with a particularly egregious incident occurring in Valencia in May, sparking widespread condemnation.
Spain is set to face Vinicius’ Brazil at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium under the banner of “One Skin,” aimed at combating racism. Vinicius tearfully shared his distress over the racial abuse he has faced across various stadiums in Spain, stating that each incident leaves him feeling increasingly disheartened and less motivated to continue playing.
Despite the challenges he faces, Vinicius asserted his determination to remain in Spain and continue playing for Real Madrid, refusing to let the racists dictate his future. He emphasized his commitment to scoring goals and excelling at the highest level, despite the discriminatory treatment he receives.
While acknowledging the importance of his football career, Vinicius highlighted the significance of the ongoing fight against racism, expressing his desire for people of color to lead normal lives free from discrimination. He lamented the fact that racial abuse detracts from his focus on playing the game he loves.
Vinicius also addressed the issue of racism on social media, condemning the recent incidents of racist chanting by Atletico Madrid fans during a Champions League match against Inter Milan. Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti previously commented on Vinicius’ resilience in the face of racism, noting that he has unfortunately become accustomed to such treatment in Spain.
Spain defender Dani Carvajal echoed Vinicius’ sentiments, condemning racism as the “ugliest” aspect of sports and calling for stricter measures against offenders. He emphasized the need to eradicate racist behavior from stadiums to ensure a more inclusive and respectful environment for all.
On a different note, Brazil coach Dorival Junior discussed the promising talent of 17-year-old Endrick, who is set to join Real Madrid alongside Vinicius in the summer.
