The stage is set for an exciting showdown as eight teams gear up for the Safaricom Chapa Dimba Nyanza Regional final, to be held at Moi Stadium in Kisumu on Sunday.
These eight teams secured their spots during the inter-county play-offs hosted at Rongo Showground and Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay over the weekend.
In the boys’ category, the line-up includes Obunga FC from Kisumu, St. Peter’s Wagai from Siaya, Nyaguku FC representing Nyamira, and Awendo Academy.
Meanwhile, the girls’ category features fierce competitors like Nyakach Girls, also known as Plateau Queens, Victoria Sports Academy, Ageng’a Girls, and Kisii Queens, all vying for a chance to advance to the nationals.
Obunga and St. Peter’s Wagai earned their regional final berths during the inter-county competition held at Raila Odinga Stadium. Obunga FC triumphed over the hosts, Karabondi FC, fondly known as the Dark Horse, with a 1-0 victory thanks to Duncan Odhiambo’s splendid 40th-minute strike.
In the second match, Karabondi faced a 2-0 loss against St. Peter’s Wagai. The third game saw Obunga FC and St. Peter’s Wagai battling to a goalless draw, resulting in both teams earning qualification with four points each.
Amos Ochieng, head coach of Obunga FC, expressed his satisfaction with his team’s performance, saying, “After winning the county finals, we knew we still had a significant task ahead of us to reach the regional finals, which will be happening in a few days. Playoffs are not easy, as every team gives its all to make it to the next level. Today’s games were really tough, but I am glad my boys took them seriously, giving their best to earn us a ticket to Kisumu for the regional finals.”
In the girls’ category, the reigning national champions, Plateau Queens, asserted their dominance by securing victories in both their matches against Ogande Girls from Homa Bay and VSA Girls from Siaya, finishing first in their group.
