Shabana FC reclaimed the top spot in the National Super League (NSL) after a convincing 3-0 victory over Darajani Gogo at the Police Sacco Stadium on Friday in Nairobi.
Despite an initial dominance by Gogo Boys, Peter Ongechi’s stunning free-kick just before halftime opened the scoring.
Ongechi continued to shine in the 70th minute, doubling Shabana’s lead with a well-executed header. Nehemiah Onchiri sealed the victory with a powerful header late in the game.
With this win, Shabana FC now sits at the summit of the NSL table with 67 points, three points ahead of their closest rivals, Muranga Seals.
Meanwhile, in Mombasa, Mara Sugar FC missed a chance to solidify their third-place position as they played out a goalless draw against Mombasa Elite.
Both teams started cautiously, with most of the action concentrated in the midfield during the opening quarter of the hour.
As the game progressed, Mara Sugar gained control and created several promising opportunities through wingers Erick Ngiela and Barasa Mohammed, but failed to convert them.
The home side also missed clear chances to take the lead, with Deng Garang and Brian Mate wasting golden opportunities before halftime.
The teams entered the break with a goalless scoreline.
In the second half, substitute Edwin Kahemba’s weak shot from ten yards out was easily saved by Mara Sugar’s goalkeeper, Emase Eliud.
Shortly after, Mombasa Elite’s Emmanuel Lunalo delivered a strong cross deflected off a Mara Sugar defender for a corner, but the visitors couldn’t capitalize on the resulting set-piece.
In other matches, MCF secured a resounding 4-1 victory against Kibera Black Stars. At the same time, Mara Sugar’s goalless draw against Mombasa Elite at Mbaraki Stadium left them with the challenging task of securing a spot in the KPL playoffs.
Meanwhile, Coastal Heroes managed to earn a valuable point in their away match against Kisumu Allstars.
These results have further intensified the competition in the NSL as teams vie for promotion and playoff spots.
