Harambee Starlets striker, Cynthia Shilwatso, is filled with confidence as she envisions her team’s journey to the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) next year. She attributes this optimism to the unwavering belief and hard work exhibited by the entire squad.
Shilwatso emerged as Kenya’s hero when they triumphed over Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses in a thrilling encounter that ended 4-3 in favour of Kenya on penalties.
She not only scored the crucial goal that secured a 1-0 victory on the evening but also calmly converted one of Kenya’s four penalty kicks.
Reflecting on their remarkable achievement, Shilwatso expressed her pride in the team’s collective effort. She acknowledged the significance of their unity and belief, stating, “This is a great feeling for us as a team because we believed and we worked hard for it. I want to thank my teammates for their efforts. We worked well as a team today, and we believed. That was the biggest difference.”
Defeating a formidable opponent like Cameroon held special importance for the team, considering their two-year absence from competitive action.
Shilwatso emphasized the boost this victory provided, saying, “Beating a team like Cameroon is huge for us. We have stayed away from action for two years, and coming back with such a massive win is a huge boost for us.”
Looking ahead, Starlets are gearing up to face Botswana in the final qualification round. Botswana’s dominance, having demolished Gabon 11-0 on aggregate, does not daunt Shilwatso and her teammates.
She expressed their readiness for the upcoming challenge, saying, “This is now behind our backs, and the work starts. We need to focus on that next game and give our best as well. We have a good team, and we have the determination to make it. I believe in this team, and I believe we can qualify for the WAFCON.”
