Tanzanian clubs had a successful weekend in African club football competitions, with Young Africans earning a surprising 2-0 victory over Nigeria’s Rivers United in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup quarter-final.
Kalala Mayele of the Democratic Republic of Congo scored both goals for Young Africans in the closing stages of the match.
The result followed Simba’s 1-0 win over Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca in the CAF Champions League quarter-final on Saturday.
Marumo Gallants of South Africa drew 1-1 with the Pyramids of Egypt in Cairo, and USM Alger secured a 2-0 victory over title favourites FAR Rabat of Morocco in Algiers.
No Tanzanian club has previously won a CAF competition, and Rivers will need to achieve a first by winning the second leg of their tie against Young Africans next Sunday.
