Tusker FC secured their spot in the round of 16 of the Mozzartbet FKF Cup after a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Division Two League side Bumbani Stars. While not the smoothest of wins, the twelve-time FKF Premier League champions managed to withstand late pressure to clinch the win.
The game saw Saidi Zamani convert a penalty 20 minutes before the final whistle, adding tension to the closing moments. However, Robert Matano’s Tusker side held on, ensuring their progression to the next round.
Daniel Sakari and Eric Zakayo contributed goals for Tusker in each half, giving them the lead. Despite having numerous chances, Tusker were fortunate not to concede more goals.
Played under sweltering conditions in Ukunda, Tusker began strongly, with Eric Otieno and Joseph Mwangi both coming close to scoring early on. Sakari broke the deadlock in the 25th minute with a superb strike from the edge of the box.
The heat affected the game’s tempo, limiting chances and keeping most battles in the midfield. Sakari almost doubled the lead just before halftime, but the keeper made a crucial save.
In the second half, Tusker made offensive substitutions, bringing in Eric Kapaito, John Njuguna, and Fabian Adikiny. They came close to scoring again when Kapaito failed to generate enough power in his shot after a well-worked move.
However, five minutes later, Zakayo found the back of the net with a powerful shot from outside the box, extending Tusker’s lead. Bumbani Stars pulled one back from the penalty spot, but Tusker managed to hold on despite late pressure.
While the home side pressed for an equalizer in the final minutes, Tusker’s defense stood firm, denying them any clear-cut chances. Ultimately, an effort from Bumbani Stars hit the bar, allowing Tusker to secure the victory and advance to the next round of the tournament.
