After missing out on the 2019 tournament, the South American team has made remarkable strides, emerging as group leaders in Australia and even shocking world number two Germany along the way.
In a packed Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, the 25th-ranked Colombian side faced a determined and physically imposing Jamaican team that had not conceded a goal throughout the competition. Despite the tough opposition, Colombia’s relentless attacking approach under the guidance of coach Nelson Abadia paid off when Usme calmly found the back of the net in the 51st minute, cracking open a previously impregnable defence.
The goal ignited a tense encounter and sent the fervent pro-Colombian crowd into a euphoric frenzy, leaving the Reggae Girlz unable to mount a comeback.
Colombia’s victory now sets the stage for a clash against England in Sydney on Saturday, with a spot in the semi-finals up for grabs. England earned their place after a gripping penalty shootout against Nigeria.
Jamaica, ranked 43rd, arrived in Australia with modest expectations, reminiscent of Colombia’s entry to the tournament. Regardless of their defeat, the Jamaican team can depart with their heads held high, having secured clean sheets against France, Panama, and Brazil.
