Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has reaffirmed his strong affection for the club and called for unity among its fans following a recent controversy.
Napoli faced criticism for sharing a TikTok video that seemed to mock Osimhen for missing a penalty. The club clarified that they did not intend to offend the player.
After scoring in Napoli’s 4-0 victory against Lecce, Osimhen expressed his deep love for the city and its people on Instagram.
In his post, Osimhen stated, “Coming to the city of Naples in 2020 was a wonderful decision for me.” He emphasized the immense love and kindness he had received from the people of Naples, pledging not to let anything come between him and the city. Osimhen credited the passion of Naples’ residents for motivating him to give his all on the field and stressed his unwavering commitment to the club’s badge.
The striker also acknowledged the support he has received from Nigerians and others, urging everyone to promote unity, respect, and understanding.
Osimhen’s agent had previously threatened legal action against the club for the controversial video, which has since been deleted. Napoli’s manager, Rudi Garcia, expressed his full dedication to the club despite the incident.
Nigeria’s Sports Minister, John Owan Enoh, mentioned that diplomatic efforts are underway with Italy regarding the incident. He affirmed the Nigerian government’s commitment to protecting the welfare and rights of its athletes.
Osimhen, who joined Napoli for a club-record fee in 2020, played a pivotal role in the team’s Serie A title victory last season, scoring 26 goals in 32 league appearances.
